Above Payette Lake, the North Fork of the Payette is a small and icy runoff stream. It only runs for two to three weeks in a normal year. This steep upper run is fast, shallow and rocky, running 1500 cfs max. Watch out for logs. A swim in this cold water could be dangerous. There is one scout half way down the run. You can't miss this dangerous rapid from the road. If you happen to be passing through McCall during runoff, it's worth a couple hours to run up and do this piece. It is also on the way to Burgdorf Hot Springs and the Secesh put-in.
