Mount Borah, located 23 miles north of Mackay in the Big Lost River valley is Idaho's highest peak at 12,662 feet. Once called Beauty Peak, it was renamed for former Idaho senator William E. Borah in 1933. A popular trek with experienced hikers, the round trip can be made in about ten hours. An historical marker notes the site of the Borah Peak Earthquake. which occurred in 1983, registering 7.3 on the Richter Scale, causing damage to the towns of Mackay and Challis.
