This primitive road, named for a miner murdered in the area in 1863, traverses 101 miles along one of the Nez Perce trails between the Selway-Bitterroot and Frank Church Wilderness areas. Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s it remains rough, steep and winding with few turnouts. There are no services for 117 miles. A high clearance vehicle is recommended - this route is inappropriate for motor homes or vehicles towing trailers. Check road conditions before heading out. A brochure is available from the Forest Service.
