Information

The area around Spencer is rich with opals, which were discovered here in 1948. Family-owned, they do their own mining, cutting and jewelry-making. In 1993, Idaho Opal Mines purchased the old store and gas station, turning it into a jewelry store that provides gas, too. They have a video tour presentation of opal mining in the Spencer area and the store offers jewelry, loose stones and rocks. A mini-museum displays the owners' private collection of opals.
